The COVID-19 pandemic may be long over, but its side effects on diabetics, particularly the elderly and the obese, persist
New Delhi (THP)
COVID-19 may have ended as a public health emergency, but it continues to be a threat, raising its head now and then. Importantly, it also continues to be a cause of concern for people with diabetes even long after they have triumphed over the virus.
Diabetics have observed elevated blood sugar levels after recovery from COVID-19, spanning across all age groups. The elderly, the obese, and those with lifestyle-related concerns find themselves at a heightened risk. The interplay between COVID-19 and diabetes is complex. Diabetes also heightens the risk of severe COVID-19.
A surge in blood sugar levels in diabetics can be attributed to several factors. First, some patients may have been unaware of their diabetic condition prior to contracting the coronavirus.
Secondly, patients with moderate or severe COVID-19 who received steroid treatment may experience elevated blood sugar, potentially triggering diabetes in those in the prediabetic stage before contracting the virus.
Thirdly, individuals genetically predisposed to diabetes may see lifestyle-related ailments exacerbated by COVID-19. Inflammatory markers surge during the infection, impacting trigger mechanisms linked to diabetes. Moreover, there is evidence suggesting the virus directly affects the pancreas, reducing insulin secretion.
Amidst the uncertainties surrounding the long-term effects of the virus, general physicians emphasise the importance of periodic blood tests for monitoring post-COVID-19 health. Consulting with a diabetologist is crucial to determine the frequency and necessity of these checks, extending well beyond the immediate aftermath of COVID-19. Especially those in the pre-diabetic category are advised to check blood sugar levels regularly for an extended period. An HbA1c test provides a three-month average of blood sugar levels. If there is an increase, medical intervention with tablets or insulin may become necessary for a brief period.
Beyond blood tests, doctors stress the importance of improving dietary habits, avoiding sugar and junk food. Consultation with a dietitian and lifestyle adjustments are recommended for post-COVID-19 patients. The mantra is simple yet powerful – consume fresh food, engage in moderate exercise, and eliminate excess sugar.
As diabetics continue their journey of recovery post-COVID-19, the vigilance over diabetes becomes essential. Life post-COVID-19 is not just about survival but also about ensuring quality life.
