World Heart Day campaign this year urges everyone to live a better lifestyle and make heart-healthy decisions for themselves and their loved ones.
A Promise to Take Proactive Measures on World Heart Day 2024
World Heart Day, observed on September 29 every year, aims to promote heart health and increase awareness on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The 2024–2026 theme of World Heart Day is “Use Heart for Action,” which highlights the significance of community and individual involvement in maintaining and improving heart health. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the importance of taking proactive measures to prevent illness and manage potential health issues. However, by doing so, individuals can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases, improve their overall health, and enhance their quality of life.
According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases account for most NCD (Noncommunicable Diseases) deaths worldwide, approximately 17.9 million people annually.1 However, many of these diseases can be prevented or managed through lifestyle changes and early detection. In fact, World Heart Federation estimates that 80% of cardiovascular disease including stroke and heart disease can be prevented through healthy diet, regular physical activity, and avoidance of tobacco use.2
Dr XYZ, a leading healthcare practitioner, emphasizes the importance of prevention in maintaining good health. “Prevention is key to a long and healthy life. By taking proactive measures such as getting regular check-ups, staying up-to-date on vaccinations, and making healthy lifestyle choices, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of developing chronic diseases and improve their quality of life,” she says.
Why Use Heart for Action?
As a personal responsibility, individuals must evaluate their regular lifestyle and habits including diet, exercise and stress management. A healthy, well-balanced diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains with low levels of sugar, salt, and bad fats can lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Performing at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity physical activity helps to strengthen the heart and enhance circulation. It is relaxing and helpful to use methods to reduce stress, such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing. Stress leaves a bad and long-lasting effect on overall health, especially heart, that is why stress management is really important. Also, regular check-ups and screenings by a healthcare professional helps one to be alert about his/heart state.3
Apart from individual level actions, community participation in improving health is equally important. By hosting exercise challenges, educational seminars, and health exams to boost heart health efforts, communities can encourage people to adapt a healthy lifestyle. Employers and educational institutions can also contribute by encouraging a balanced diet and offering stress-reduction tools.
Early Diagnosis and Care Prevents Complications in Cardiovascular Diseases
Cardiovascular diseases can be largely prevented by addressing risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet, obesity, physical inactivity, and air pollution. Early detection through diagnostic tests like right heart ventricular angiography plays a critical role in preventing complications like heart attacks and strokes. It is essential that countries prioritize including cardiovascular disease management interventions in universal health coverage packages, invest in primary care services, and make basic medications such as aspirin, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, and statins available to their populations.
This comprehensive understanding of the importance of early detection and prevention of cardiovascular diseases underlines the need for enhanced diagnostic capabilities. It also highlights the importance of investing in healthcare infrastructure and access to primary health care programs for vulnerable communities worldwide.
