Do not dismiss any cough in children under five years

Pneumonia is preventable and treatable and timely detection helps to control its severity and make the best use of widely available means of treatment

New Delhi (THP)

The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies pneumonia as the leading cause of death from infectious diseases among children worldwide. It is preventable and treatable. Timely detection is crucial to leverage widely available treatment.

A significant obstacle in combating pneumonia across the country is the lack of awareness about symptom emergence and onset. Dr. Charu Kalra, a paediatrician at Max Multi Speciality Centre, Noida, emphasises the critical role of early diagnosis and vaccination in controlling the severity of pneumonia.

She states, “Pneumonia persists in India due to a lack of awareness and the habit of overlooking symptoms. Many reach health facilities late and by then considerable damage has already occurred.”

Dr. Kalra issues a cautionary note, urging parents not to dismiss any cough in children under five years lightly. She emphasises the necessity of vaccination for every child, following the yearly schedules recommended by paediatricians.

Recognising early signs: Children under five are highly vulnerable to pneumonia, yet they may struggle to express their discomfort. Parents must be vigilant for early signs and promptly seek medical attention if their child exhibits the following symptoms:

  • Abnormal Breathing Rate: A higher-than-normal breathing rate is cause for concern, necessitating immediate medical consultation.
  • Bluish Discoloration: Children with pneumonia may develop a bluish tint due to inadequate oxygen levels in the body.
  • In-drawing Chest: If the child’s chest contracts instead of expanding during breathing, it is an alarming sign.

Other symptoms:

  • Poor appetite or lethargy.
  • Wheezing cough with mucus.
  • Chills.
  • Difficulty in breathing or wheezing.
  • Sleep apnea, where breathing momentarily stops during sleep.

Home remedies: In addition to seeking medical advice, some home remedies can offer relief:

  • Hydration: Ensure the child stays well-hydrated with water, clear soups, and warm fluids.
  • Rest: Allow the child sufficient rest to aid recovery.
  • Humidifier: Using a humidifier can ease breathing difficulties.
  • Elevate the Head: Elevating the child’s head while sleeping can reduce discomfort.

Remember, while home remedies can provide comfort, consulting a healthcare professional is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment. “Timely medical attention, along with proper care at home, can make a significant difference,” concludes Dr. Kalra.
