The shocking news of sudden death of young celebrities or commoners, who are fitness enthusiasts, keeps on trickling regularly.
While moderate-intensity physical exercise has garnered endorsement from major cardiac societies, recent instances of sudden cardiac death in physically fit individuals have spurred debates.
Contrary to the belief that more intense exercise provides added protection, senior cardiologist Dr. P.B. Jayagopal emphasises that extremely high-intensity exercise does not offer additional benefits.
In fact, it can be risky. Engaging in intense and unfamiliar physical activity within 48 hours before death was linked to unexplained sudden death, according to a recent study by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Exertion during exercise is recognised for elevating the risk of acute plaque rupture, causing partial or complete blockage of coronary arteries and resulting in sudden death, added the study.
Marathon runners, for instance, have a high likelihood of developing erratic heart rates, specifically atrial fibrillation, which means heart’s upper chambers are not beating in sync with lower chambers. A lifetime workout of 2,000 hours in these endurance trainers can lead to this particular problem.
So, recognising early signals of heart issues and picking them up in a timely manner become vital. Early signs, including persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, and irregular heartbeats, necessitate regular health check-ups and consultations with healthcare professionals.
Choosing the correct exercises is equally paramount. Tailoring workouts to individual fitness levels, incorporating a balance of cardiovascular and strength training, and gradually progressing in intensity contribute to overall heart health. Seeking guidance from qualified fitness trainers and healthcare professionals is crucial for a safe and effective exercise regimen.
In the broader context of heart health, the role of diet is undeniable. Adopting a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is instrumental for maintaining good health. Additionally, referencing drugs should be done under the guidance of medical professionals to manage specific cardiovascular conditions.
In the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, avoiding unqualified trainers is imperative. Entrusting one’s fitness journey to knowledgeable and certified professionals ensures that exercise programmes are tailored to individual needs and health conditions.
The relationship between exercise and heart health is nuanced. While moderate-intensity exercise holds proven benefits, extreme intensity may not provide added protection and can even pose risks. Understanding early signs, choosing appropriate exercises, maintaining a heart-healthy diet, and seeking qualified guidance are crucial steps towards ensuring a holistic approach to heart health.
